Where the World Watches Back series
WTWWB - Mythic - 01
Unicorns once ran through green fields, where the wind carried wildflower seeds and the sky stretched open and endless above them. They were Creatures that kept their distance, of quiet magic—seen only by those who believed in something just beyond the horizon. But the fields grew smaller. The roads came. The lights stayed on too long. Now unicorns move through underpasses and rail yards, hooves striking sparks from broken concrete, splashing through puddles that mirror streetlights instead of stars. This creature of light walks where the city forgets itself— chain-link fences, graffiti corridors, places where magic still lingers beneath the bustle of the city. Its coat is still bright above, catching neon and moonlight the same way it once held dawn. But its legs are stained—paint drips, black soot, the layered marks of a thousand hands touching its hide. Tags from kids who never saw a unicorn in a meadow, but felt one in the quiet hum of dusky streets. They leave their names on it like offerings. Proof they were part of something bigger than themselves. The unicorn doesn’t mind. It lowers its head for them. Stands still when they get close. Lets them believe. Belief is rarer now than magic ever was. And in a world that trades wonder for walls, it has chosen not to stay clean—but to stay alive. To carry every mark. Every color. Every small, stubborn act of defiance. It wears the city’s stains like trophies, not because they scar it— but because they mean someone, somewhere, still looked in the dark and chose to see their light. And as long as that happens, the unicorn will keep walking these streets, still wild and free.
